Jeff died in a car accident just outside of Redmond in the prime of his life. He was active in High School in all the sports and loved music. We'll all remember him fondly.
I practically lived at the Harvold's house from the 8th grade through the 10th grade and we played a lot of music in that back room for 3 or 4 years more. Jeff wrote a number of his own songs, and we used to perfrom the best ones, mixed in with the top 40 tunes, in the taverns and cocktail louges that we performed in. It's been so long ago now, that even I'm forgetting some of the tunes, but "Let's All Go To SJ (Shelton Jackson) was one, and "Stillwater Hill" was another. I ended up receiving some old tapes of our music, but the recordings aren't very good and I haven't listened to them in a long time. I'll always remember that whenever we played "The Hanky Panky", that Jeff would swing his guitar up over his shoulders, and play the lead part with his guitar in that position. Jeff was one heck of a shooting guard in basketball, and a hard hitting football player. A great team mate, a great young man.
It's taken me awhile to be able to write here. I'm not sure why....it was all so long ago. But perhaps many of you don't know the story, so here goes.
Jeff & I dated on and off in our Junior & Senior years. He and Jerry went to Sitka to play basketball out of High School and I went to BCC. When he came home, I went to WSU for a year. We stayed 'an item' through all of that.
We were both home the summer of '74. The accident occur coming home from dinner in Bellevue one evening. I had dozed off. For a few years I had thought that Jeff had also dozed off and crossed the center line....but as I came to find out later, the other car crossed into our lane. An SUV against Jeff's mustang, we never had a chance.
Just that fast, Jeff was gone. I was devastated. He was a great guy....very kind and generous. I was badly injured, in the hospital for 3 months and then a body cast for 7 months. The physical wounds healed much faster than the heart.
As I said, it was a long time ago....and as they say 'time heals all wounds'. I was lucky enough to have met Dick Bangsund, we have now been married 32 years, and I love him with all my heart. But I will always remember Jeff Harvold as that guy who gave me my first kiss and who was my first love.
